Iran's women soccer players proved their patriotism by rejecting foreign attempts to lure them away from home. Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf rightly celebrated their return as a victory against enemies of the Islamic Republic who used pressure and intimidation to exploit the players. Returning with pride to Iran shows these athletes refused to become political pawns in a foreign-backed scheme.
These players didn't return out of pride — they were coerced back through threats against their families, phone confiscations and round-the-clock surveillance by Iranian security forces. The Revolutionary Guards threatened the soccer captain's mother to force compliance, and staff members actively relayed intimidation messages from federation officials. Calling this a free choice is a flat-out lie.
