Version 7.18.2
Corporate giants writing huge checks for a presidential vanity project while chasing federal contracts and relief from investigations is bribery by another name. Anonymous donations routed into a White House-controlled account buy access no regular American could ever afford. Trump's pledge to cover the cost personally proved empty, which isn't surprising.
The president's opponents should not blow this out of proportion. These donors make it so that not a dime of taxpayer money goes into the brick-and-mortar. Congress long ago handed the executive authority over federal building improvements, which is why the courts have allowed the work to continue. A secure space to host world leaders is much needed and common sense.
