Version 7.17.1
Mali asked for help, Russia delivered, and now Kidal is back under strategic control. This partnership, built on respect for sovereignty, starkly contrasts the decade Western forces spent deploying thousands of peacekeepers across the Sahel, only to leave the insurgency stronger than ever. Meanwhile, Kyiv coaches separatists on drone warfare, which says plenty about who actually wants stability and who is fueling conflict in West Africa.
Russia promised protection but delivered retreat, dead mercenaries and a junta losing top commanders, with Mali’s recapture of Kidal doing little to erase that record. Trading gold and minerals for a security partner that struggles to hold territory or distinguish civilians from fighters remains a poor bargain. Sahel governments deserve real counterterrorism partners, not Moscow’s mercenaries who inflame conflict.
