Version 7.18.2
When the government uses force on a New Yorker, the bar for accountability belongs at the absolute highest. Letting officers slide into retirement before a disciplinary case finishes makes a mockery of the whole system, and grieving families deserve answers instead of closed doors. Funding real independent oversight is a modest, overdue fix — hardly the radical overhaul some feared.
A sweeping use-of-force review rushed out to calm an angry political base makes nobody safer. Real dysfunction sits with a politically appointed board second-guessing split-second decisions in hindsight, while the city's own clerical failure gets papered over by blaming officers. Reviewing policies means little unless the biased way those rules get interpreted faces equal scrutiny.
