The Facts

  • Dan Norris, the independent MP for North East Somerset and Hanham, was arrested for a second time for alleged rape, sexual assault, voyeurism and upskirting in relation to three female victims. Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the arrest follows a first last April.
  • Avon and Somerset Police stated they are no longer actively investigating any sexual offences against children, but the original rape and misconduct in public office investigation continues. All offences are alleged to have occurred between the 2000s and 2020s.
  • In a statement, Norris said: "I vigorously and entirely deny the serious allegations made against me. They are untrue. I am challenging them through my legal representatives." The MP remains on conditional bail.

The Spin

Narrative A

Norris denies these serious allegations and is actively fighting them through legal representation. Police have already dropped the child sex offence investigations, with cases such as these complex tasks that require time and patience. For now these allegations are unproven, and everyone deserves the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in court.

Narrative B

This represents a damaging scandal for Labour, with Norris's further charges joining mounting pressure over Labour's handling of Peter Mandelson amongst others. Though not yet convicted, the pattern of alleged offenses against numerous victims from the 2000s through 2020s clearly make Norris unfit to serve in public office any longer.
