NZ Cult Leader Gets 10 Years in Death, Kidnapping Case

The New Zealand High Court sentenced cult leader Kaixiao Liu to 10 years and five months in prison on Tuesday, after he was convicted of manslaughter and kidnapping in connection with the death of 70-year-old Shulai Wang, a Chinese national who had been living at his home near Auckland.

Wang first arrived in New Zealand from Hainan, China, in August 2023 and moved into Liu's home, called the Ark, in Orewa. Five other women from China also resided there, and the household was tightly controlled, with the women expected to refer to Liu as "Lord" or "Master."

After Wang attempted to escape on March 6, 2024, she was restrained on Liu's orders for approximately 38 hours, denied food and water and had her mouth taped shut. She died during the ordeal, most likely on March 8, 2024, according to court documents.

Subsequently, Liu and his accomplices wrapped Wang's body in refuse bags, placed it in a stroller and transported it to a tidal creek near Gulf Harbour Marina, where it was disposed of, with Liu bringing his children along to use as camouflage. A fisherman later discovered the body on March 12, 2024.

Delivering the sentence, Justice Mathew Downs described Liu as the ringleader and cited his "callous indifference" toward Wang, imposing a minimum non-parole period of 50% of his sentence. Liu's wife, Lanyue Xiao, meanwhile, received seven years and 11 months, with no minimum non-parole period imposed, for her role in the crime.

The pair were originally found guilty in June, alongside Liu's mother, Xiuyun Li, for kidnapping and his father, Jingui Liu, for misconduct involving human remains. Justice Downs is set to sentence Liu's parents later this year, after they present material before the court.

The heavy sentence handed down by Justice Downs reflects the severity of this crime, as well as the zero-tolerance stance of New Zealand authorities towards instances of abuse such as this.

This terrible case should highlight the danger cults pose. Across New Zealand, there are roughly 50,000 current or former cult members, underscoring the scale of this threat. Without urgent government action, including an anti-cult agency or legal recognition of coercive control as a crime, it will only be a matter of time before another victim becomes the next Shulai Wang.
