    The Facts

    • The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) claimed responsibility for shooting dead American pilot Nicholas F. Gosselin and burning his plane after it landed in the Yahukimo region of Highland Papua province on July 2.
    • Indonesian authorities confirmed the aircraft, operated by PT AMA, was found burned at a local airport in Yahukimo carrying one pilot and seven Papuan passengers, but could not immediately verify whether rebels carried out the attack or confirm the pilot's death.
    • TPNPB spokesman Sebby Sambom said the plane was targeted for allegedly violating the group's ban on civilian flights in areas it considers operational zones, claiming such aircraft had been used to transport Indonesian military personnel. The Indonesian military denied that the plane carried troops.

    The Spin

    Pro-establishment narrative

Shooting an unarmed American pilot and burning a civilian plane that carried seven indigenous Papuan passengers is terrorism. The Indonesian military confirmed those passengers were civilians, not troops, which demolishes the TPNPB's justification entirely. Armed rebels targeting foreign pilots flying food and supplies to remote villages can't be framed as a legitimate independence movement.

    Establishment-critical narrative

The TPNPB's killing of American pilot Nicholas Gosselin exposes decades of international failure to address Papua's legitimate independence struggle. Papua was folded into Indonesia through a 1969 U.N.-backed sham ballot, and the resulting insurgency has only grown deadlier as the world looks away. International actors are refusing to negotiate a real resolution.
