The Facts

  • The U.S. State Department notified Congress last week of its plans to close five foreign missions, despite China surpassing the U.S. in recent years in the number of diplomatic posts worldwide, according to a Reuters report published on Monday.
  • Sources familiar with the matter told the news outlet the posts targeted for closure include the embassy in St. George's, Grenada; consulates in Nagoya, Japan; Medan, Indonesia; and Winnipeg, Canada; as well as an embassy branch office in Douala, Cameroon.
  • It follows rumours from the previous year that the State Department was considering closing nearly a dozen consulates as part of a cost-cutting exercise, with the Office of Management and Budget advocating for shuttering almost 30 foreign missions.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Cutting the size of the State Department is essential to secure optimal returns for U.S. taxpayers. Before Rubio took office, the department had grown into a bloated, expensive bureaucracy while delivering poorer outcomes and weaker diplomacy. Making the State Department great again requires removing any waste to transform it into the leaner, more effective foreign policy apparatus America needs.

Anti-Trump narrative

Gutting the State Department at a time when China is expanding its diplomatic budget and circling U.S interests is a strategic blunder that leaves America flying blind abroad. Haphazard cuts will reduce America's diplomatic reach and scupper international relationships that have taken decades to build. Rather than serving America, this plays right into the hands of her adversaries.
