Riots Erupt in Albania as Students Join Anti-Government Protests
Are protests being hijacked to sow chaos or is the violence a result of peaceful rallies being ignored?

The Facts
- Riots in the Albanian capital of Tirana erupted for a second consecutive day on Wednesday, leaving behind a trail of damage to government buildings, banks and other private businesses.
- The country has been gripped by largely non-violent, anti-government demonstrations since late May, with protesters calling for reforms and rallying against alleged corruption in connection with a proposed luxury resort that's linked to U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
- However, tensions flared this week as the movement was joined by students who called for better university conditions, lower tuition fees and other demands — echoing the wave of student-led protests that commenced in France and have since spread to a number of other European countries.

The Spin
Pro-government narrative
Protest is a legitimate right but it must not be used as an excuse for violence and destruction of the city. Most of those arrested are over the age of 50 and have no interest in progress but rather the sowing of chaos. Students and honest citizens are called on to distance themselves from those who are carrying out acts of destruction.
Government-critical narrative
People have a right to choose their leaders, as well as a right to demand change when trust is lost. Albania's youth should not be pushed into a revolution but their hand was forced when politicians ignored previous demands and peaceful protest. It is time for the prime minister to resign and for the people of Albania to be given justice, dignity and a future.
