The Facts
- Armed Israeli settlers allegedly beat Agence France-Presse (AFP) photographer Jaafar Ashtiyeh, 58, with rifle butts Tuesday near the northern West Bank village of Aqraba as he covered settler violence against Palestinian olive farmers, witnesses, his family and colleagues said.
- Ashtiyeh suffered bruises to his head and torso and was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Nablus, where X-rays found no broken bones, his son Zain Jaafar said. He will remain under round-the-clock observation.
- AFP photographer John Wessels said a man on a quad bike raced toward the journalists and opened fire, wounding a Palestinian in the foot, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society. At least six others then ran at them, firing guns.
