Singapore GDP Beats Forecasts at 5.4%

Is the AI boom hollowing out jobs and widening a K-shaped divide or is it rewarding early bets on the semiconductor supply chain?

The Facts

  • Singapore's GDP grew 5.4% annually in the third quarter, advance estimates released Wednesday showed, beating a 5.1% consensus forecast but also marking the slowest annual pace since the third quarter of 2025.
  • The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) kept the slope, width and center of its currency policy band unchanged Wednesday, the first pause after tightening in April and July, as AI-related demand continued to lift manufacturing. The MAS conducts monetary policy by managing exchange rates rather than using interest rates.
  • Manufacturing, which accounts for about 20% of Singapore's GDP, grew 7.5% year on year in the third quarter, down from 12.9% in the second, while construction expanded 8.8%, up from 6.1%, according to the advance estimates.

The Spin

Narrative A

Headline growth means nothing when fresh grads can't land full-time work and small businesses drown in rent. The AI push mostly thins payrolls while regional headquarters post solid profits, widening a K-shaped split that has already cracked at the bottom. Without real bargaining power, the gains flow upward and property flipping becomes the only ladder left.

Narrative B

Positioning inside the semiconductor and cloud value chain before the boom arrived is paying off, and manufacturing and export strength proves it, helping to drive Singapore's GDP growth. Renting out land and electricity captures scraps, while supplying the memory, equipment and precision engineering the AI build-out depends on captures real margin. Selling the picks and shovels beats buying them.
