Spain's dismantling of a smuggling network responsible for at least 64 crossings and more than 2,000 migrant transfers, alongside drug and weapons trafficking, demonstrates the value of coordinated European policing. The operation led to 78 arrests, the seizure of 18 speedboats, and disrupted a criminal enterprise that earned over €24 million from migrant smuggling. As migration pressures have intensified, targeting these networks is a tangible step toward protecting migrants and strengthening border security.

Establishment-critical narrative

Law enforcement successes are welcome, but dismantling one smuggling ring does not reverse a broader migration crisis. As crossings have shifted from the Canary Islands to the western Mediterranean, pressure on Ceuta, the Balearics, and mainland Spain has continued to grow. Spain needs stronger border enforcement, faster returns, and tougher policies that deter illegal entry rather than simply dismantling the networks that facilitate it.
