TikTok to Pay DOJ $400M to Settle Kids' Privacy Case
Is this a sweetheart deal that shortchanges child victims or a landmark enforcement win that delivers real protections?

The Trump DOJ let TikTok off easy, settling for $400 million when the company had already agreed to pay $1 billion under Biden-era negotiations. The White House's cozy relationship with TikTok kneecapped the government's leverage and handed the company a sweetheart deal. Kids' privacy deserved real protections, not pennies on the dollar.
Republican narrative
The settlement is one of the largest COPPA recoveries ever, and it came with real structural changes — stronger youth safeguards, better age controls and expanded parental oversight tools. TikTok has overhauled its ownership, management and privacy practices. Holding a company accountable at this scale is exactly what good enforcement looks like.
