The Facts

  • U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday recommending that children receive vaccines against 11 diseases rather than the 17 previously advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and directing that the MMR vaccine be split into three separate shots.
  • The order divides the childhood immunization schedule into three categories: vaccines recommended for all children, those advised only for high-risk groups and those subject to shared decision-making between parents and doctors, including flu and COVID-19 shots.
  • The order directs the attorney general to pursue legal challenges against states that do not allow religious or medical exemptions to school vaccine mandates. It also urges states to update their own vaccine requirements to reflect the administration's revised recommendations.

The Spin

Narrative A

Trump has finally fixed the bloated U.S. vaccine schedule by focusing on 11 core vaccines against the most serious diseases. Splitting the MMR and giving parents flexibility isn't anti-science — it's aligning with how other developed countries already operate. Hepatitis B and COVID shots no longer being pushed on all kids is long-overdue common sense.

Narrative B

Rewriting the childhood vaccine schedule without a functioning scientific advisory process is dangerous and unlawful, and kids on separate shot schedules complete their series at far lower rates. This executive order puts children at real risk of hospitalization and death from preventable diseases. Trump and Kennedy shouldn't be trusted on this matter.
