Trump Says Venezuela Not Ready for Elections

Is Venezuela unready for elections, trapped by delay or is the U.S. using democracy as cover for regime change and resource control?

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Trump's right: rushing Venezuela to the polls now would be reckless. The armed forces remain riddled with Chavista loyalists and drug-linked officers, Cabello's colectivo militias still operate freely and the judiciary and CNE are still stacked with regime holdovers. Without first neutralizing these entrenched networks, any quick vote risks becoming symbolic theater or triggering the exact chaos and state collapse that toppled Iraq, Syria, and Libya after abrupt transitions.

Government-critical narrative

The "not ready" claim doesn't hold up. Six months post-Maduro, the same forces once loyal to him met an earthquake killing thousands with repression, stealing from victims while blocking María Corina Machado's return. Far from cautiously preparing for democracy, this is the old repressive machine exploiting delay. Calling Venezuela not ready for elections ignores that every month without a firm timeline lets that machine consolidate further, making genuine readiness less likely.

Establishment-critical narrative

The U.S. has never really cared about democracy abroad, so it should have been obvious that the Trump administration promoted this rhetoric only to justify the bombing of a foreign country and the kidnapping of its legitimate head of state in an abhorrent operation to gain control over resources in Venezuela. The U.S. endgame in Venezuela isn't free and fair elections, but installing a puppet regime. Even Machado may end up behind bars if she goes against Washington.
