Two Syrian Pipelines Damaged in Separate Incidents
Is Syria's energy infrastructure being effectively defended or do repeated attacks expose a broken security system?

The Facts
- The state-owned Syrian Petroleum Company (SPC) announced on Thursday that two oil and gas pipelines in the country have been damaged, amid a spate of recent attacks on Syrian energy infrastructure.
- In a press release, the company said an explosion struck the 16-inch (40.6 cm) Al-Jabsa gas export pipeline at around 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Al-Shaddadi, igniting a fire. No information was released on casualties or what triggered the incident.
- Officials told the state news agency SANA that crews have closed valves on both sides of the damaged section, with repairs expected to finish by early next week. In the meantime, power plants will get gas through alternative arrangements, with no effect on household supply.

Pro-government narrative
The SPC, coordinating with the Syrian government, is doing everything in its power to combat the attacks on Syria's oil and gas infrastructure. Facilities and pipelines are well guarded and when attacks occur, the SPC, law enforcement and workers respond quickly to identify those responsible and repair the damage at lightning speed.
Government-critical narrative
A pipeline blast here, a power plant knocked offline there; the frequency of these incidents suggests something is badly broken in how Syria's energy lifeline is guarded. Patching the holes after the fact will not stop these attacks. Instead, the government must harden security at every station to thwart these efforts, lest concerns rise that it can't.
