UK's FCA to Investigate Case of Lutnick-Epstein Whistleblower After Death
The Facts
- The U.K.'s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) confirmed on Monday that it will investigate its handling of whistleblower allegations brought forward by Simon Andriesz, a British banker who died in Thailand late last month after he exposed alleged business dealings between U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
- The death of 57-year-old Andriesz, reportedly by suicide, was disclosed by Andy Agathangelou, the founder of campaign group Transparency Task Force (TTF), last Friday. According to the BBC, his family said there were no signs of foul play.
- Andriesz, a former managing director at BGC Group, where Lutnick was the CEO until taking the post in the Trump administration, appeared in an online event hosted by TTF that was released in August. There, he outlined the disclosures he made to the FCA, alongside other regulators such as HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The step of becoming a whistleblower is one that comes with lots of stress and can leave individuals feeling vulnerable. That is why the FCA is making greater efforts to better communicate about the actions it's taking as a result of disclosures. It has also appointed a non-executive director to examine its dealings with Mr Andreisz so the organization can take those lessons into its future dealings.
Establishment-critical narrative
It is not enough for the FCA to investigate itself for these failings. That is tantamount to grading its own homework and the organization will inevitably protect itself. There needs to be a fully independent inquiry so that the full facts of this case can be revealed. Only that will lead to the reforms necessary for the mistakes of this case not being repeated.
