The Facts

  • A map of Africa displayed by the U.S. State Department at an international AIDS conference taking place in Brazil this week mislabeled every country that was featured in the graphic.
  • The error was first brought to light by AIDS expert Emily Bass in her Substack on Sunday before being reported by international media publications.
  • The map highlighted the nations of Nigeria, Mozambique, Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire, Malawi and Cameroon. However, none of them were correctly labeled.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

This was an unfortunate error caused by a team member hastily altering the slide deck at the last minute. The State Department has taken full responsibility for the confusion and misrepresentation it caused for attendees.

Establishment-critical narrative

The fact that such an error could be made at an international AIDS conference without being caught is very telling of the level of competence at the State Department at the minute.
