The Facts
- U.S. forces on Okinawa were barred from consuming alcohol on or off base Wednesday as part of a 48-hour operational pause, with a 30-day curfew requiring personnel to be in their quarters or off-base residences from midnight to 5 a.m. to follow.
- This comes after Okinawa prefectural police arrested Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, who is stationed at Futenma Air Station, on suspicion of strangling Anna Yagi, 39, at a hotel in Naha early Saturday and stealing her wallet and backpack. He has denied the allegations.
- Lt. Gen. Benjamin Watson, commander of III Marine Expeditionary Force, said in a letter posted Tuesday that incidents like this "demand we pause for reflection" and that service members would receive extra training on standards, discipline and alliance responsibilities.
