A private arbitrator has ordered The Washington Post to reinstate opinion columnist Karen Attiah and award her full back pay and lost benefits after ruling the newspaper lacked sufficient cause to fire her. Attiah announced the ruling by writing that the Post has "been ordered to reinstate me immediately."

The arbitrator's ruling from last Thursday concluded that the Post "did not have good and sufficient cause" to terminate Attiah and had violated its collective bargaining agreement with the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, which required termination to stem from progressive discipline or gross misconduct.

Attiah was fired on Sept. 11, 2025, one day after posting on Bluesky in response to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed Sept. 10 at Utah Valley University. The Post's termination letter cited violations of its social media policy and alleged harm to the organization's integrity.

This ruling sets a dangerous precedent. News organizations should be able to fire a columnist whose posts cause serious reputational damage and spread racial animosity. This outcome lets an open leftist extremist walk back into one of the country's most influential newsrooms, rewarding inflammatory rhetoric with job security. Accountability should still matter, especially when lies are spread.
