Russia-Ukraine

Amid ongoing clashes for control of the Donetsk city of Bakhmut, Ukrainian Pres. Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that "the situation is getting more and more difficult."This was echoed by the UK's defense ministry on Saturday, which said that the city is "under severe pressure" as Russia reportedly made successful advances.On Wednesday, top diplomats from G20 countries arrived in New Delhi for the forum's foreign secretaries meeting,which was held on Thursdayand ended without any consensus on the war.Meanwhile, Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin ordered officials to strengthen control of the border with Ukraine on Tuesday after a number of drone attacks occurred within Russian territory.

World Politics

Bola Tinubu won Nigeria's presidential election,Turkey's Pres. Recep Tayyip Erdoǧan indicated that the country's election would be held on May 14,India's Supreme Court ordered an independent panel to appoint election officers,Pakistan's top court ordered elections in two provinces to be held in 90 days,as provincial elections for Punjab were set for April 30,and tens of thousands marched to protest Mexico's electoral overhaul.In other news, the UK's Telegraph published a report based on text messages of former Health Secretary Matt Hancock that raised questions about the government's response to COVIDand apparently showed government officials mocking people in hotel quarantine,Argentina urged the UK to resume negotiations over the Falkland Islands,and the UK and the EU announced a post-Brexit Northern Ireland trade deal.In other news, the European Parliament banned TikTok from staff devices,a US House panel approved a bill that would allow US Pres. Joe Biden to ban TikTok,a US House committee held its first hearing on China's alleged threat to the nation,and a report found that China is leading the world's technology race in most key areas.Meanwhile, US intelligence found foreign adversaries are unlikely to blame for the mysterious "Havana syndrome,"the US imposed new sanctions on Iran,former Cambodian opposition leader Kem Sokha was sentenced to 27 years of house arrest,a report alleged that India's PM Narendra Modi gave "inappropriate" coal deals to Adani Enterprises Ltd.,and Finland began building a fence along its border with Russia.

US Politics

The Republican National Committee said that GOP presidential candidates must pledge their support to the eventual 2024 nominee,Fox News' controlling owner, Rupert Murdoch, admitted that some of the network's broadcasters endorsed false claims about the 2020 Election,and the Dept. of Justice rejected former Pres. Donald Trump’s claim to immunity from lawsuits filed over his alleged role in the Jan. 6 riots.Meanwhile, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot lost her re-election bid,the US House Ethics Committee opened a probe into Rep. George Santos,SCOTUS voiced skepticism over Biden’s student loan cancellation plan,and Federal Aviation Administration nominee Phil Washington testified before a Senate committee.

Crime & Justice

Biden proposed a $1.6B program to investigate COVID fraud,the US Justice Dept. unveiled a new program to reallocate the cost of corporate crime into the pockets of executives,the US Marshals Service announced it was hit with a ransomware attack,and Robert Kennedy's assassin was denied parole for the 16th time.Meanwhile, New York City agreed to pay millions to demonstrators who were detained or arrested while protesting the death of George Floyd in 2020,the US requested that Mexico extradite El Chapo's son,88 hostages taken during a protest against an oil company in Colombia were released,and Sudanese police admitted to killing a protester during anti-military demonstrations.

Civil Liberties

In the US, the Biden admin. announced plans to create a task force to address child labor,a group of detainees at two facilities run by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement held a hunger strike over alleged inhumane treatment,Florida introduced a bill to make it easier to sue the media for defamation,the popular "Dilbert" comic strip was dropped by several publications after its creator made controversial comments about race,a dozen states filed a lawsuit to improve access to the abortion pill,and Tennessee passed two bills to ban transgender treatment for minors and drag shows performed in front of children.Elsewhere, Iran opened an investigation into allegations that several schoolgirls have been poisoned in an attempt to close girls' schools,nearly 60 died after a migrant boat sunk near Italy,an Al Jazeera report accused Twitter of censoring Palestinian public figures,and Belarusian Nobel Peace Prize winner Alex Bialiatski was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The Bank of America warned that the Federal Reserve could raise rates to 6%,a report found that UK house prices fell at their fastest rate in over a decade last month,UK energy bills are expected to rise by an average of 20% this year,and a report found that half of Sri Lankan families are reducing their children's food intake amid the ongoing economic turmoil.

A US government report andthe FBI said that a China lab leak was "likely" behind COVID,a report warned that half of the world is on track to being overweight by 2035,the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an alert for a drug-resistant stomach bug,the US Dept. of Justice sued a Louisiana chemical maker over its alleged failure to reduce people's exposure to carcinogenic chloroprene,and a report found that the artificial sweetener erythritol is linked to heart attacks and strokes.

Weather & Environment

Turkey was hit by another magnitude 5.6 quake in the latest aftershock,a state of emergency was declared in Vanuatu after it was hit by two earthquakes and two cyclones in a week,and dozens of activists protested in front of Norway's energy ministry over a wind farm.

A train collision in Greece killed at least 40,and the US House GOP opened a probe into the government's response to the train derailment in Ohio.
