Top AI Firms Earn Failing Grades on FLI Safety Index
The Future of Life Institute on Tuesday released its 2026 first-half AI Safety Index, evaluating nine major AI companies — Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, Z.ai, Alibaba Cloud, xAI, DeepSeek and Mistral — across six categories including risk assessment, existential safety and governance.
Anthropic ranked first overall with a grade of C+, while OpenAI and Google DeepMind each received a C and Meta scored a D+. xAI, DeepSeek and Mistral all received failing grades, and not a single company earned an A or B in any category.
The index found that Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Meta had each weakened or abandoned prior commitments to halt development if certain risk thresholds were reached. Anthropic dropped a pledge in February not to train AI systems without first demonstrating its safety measures were sufficient.

Anthropic Says Claude Has Set Up Its Own Thinking Space
Anthropic published research on Monday identifying an internal structure within its Claude AI models called J-Space, which functions as a hidden workspace where the model processes concepts without expressing them in its output.
The J-Space was detected using a mathematical tool called the Jacobian lens, or J-lens, which was not designed into Claude but emerged spontaneously during training, according to Anthropic.
In one experiment, researchers swapped the concept "spider" for "ant" in Claude's J-Space, causing the model to change its answer about the number of legs on a web-spinning animal from eight to six.

Report: China Eyes Curbs on Overseas Access to Top AI Systems
According to a report published by Reuters on Tuesday, Chinese authorities have held meetings over the past month with Alibaba, ByteDance and startup Z.ai to discuss potentially restricting overseas access to China's most advanced AI systems, including those not yet released.
The meetings, led by China's Ministry of Commerce, covered possible limits on both closed-source and open-weight AI systems. Officials also discussed making unauthorized disclosure or theft of proprietary AI technology an offense under China's national security law.
The scope of any restrictions remains undecided, and two sources told Reuters the measures may apply only to future systems. A May roundtable of Chinese legal experts proposed a tiered system, ranging from simple registration for basic tools to domestic-only restrictions for the most sensitive frontier systems.

Meta to Invest CA$13B in First Canadian Data Center
Meta announced on Wednesday that it will build its first Canadian data center in Sturgeon County, Alberta, committing more than CA$13 billion ($9.2 billion) to the venture in one of the largest private investments in Canada's history.
The 1-gigawatt facility, Meta's 33rd data center globally and its largest outside the U.S., is expected to take two to three years to construct and will support more than 3,000 construction jobs at peak activity and over 300 permanent operational positions.
A separate 932-megawatt natural gas power plant, the Greenlight Electricity Centre, will partially power the data center. Led by a consortium including Pembina Pipeline, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners and Kineticor, it is expected to begin operating in the second half of 2030.

Meta's Muse AI Tool Sparks Privacy Backlash

NYT, Others Seek Sanctions Against OpenAI Over Copyright
The New York Times, The New York Daily News and 15 other media organizations filed a federal court motion Thursday seeking sanctions against OpenAI for withholding evidence during the discovery phase of their lawsuit.
Publishers allege OpenAI misled the court for two years by claiming it lacked the ability to search its training datasets and ChatGPT output logs. An April deposition allegedly revealed it had conducted such searches.

SK Hynix Raises $26.5B in Stock Market Debut
South Korean chip maker SK Hynix raised $26.5 billion in its Nasdaq stock market debut, marking the largest-ever U.S. listing by a foreign company, surpassing the $25.6 billion raised by Saudi Aramco in 2019 and the $21.8 billion raised by Alibaba in its New York IPO.
The offering was seven times oversubscribed, with more than 500 investment firms competing for shares. SK Hynix sold 177.9 million American depositary shares at $149 each.
