Trump Adjusts Hormuz Stance Amid New Strikes

The Facts

  • U.S. President Donald Trump stated Tuesday that the U.S. would replace a proposed 20% charge on all cargo passing through the strait with investment deals with Gulf states. The U.S. also launched additional strikes on Iran on Tuesday in preparation for a naval blockade against Iranian ports.

  • This comes as the Kuwaiti Naval Forces said that four personnel were wounded in a strike on a vessel on Tuesday. Iranian cruise missiles on Monday had struck two UAE tankers, the Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, in the southern lane of the Strait of Hormuz within Omani territorial waters, killing one crew member and injuring eight others.

  • Iran's IRGC claimed its missile and drone strikes destroyed the U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet's air control radar, a Patriot radar and a C-RAM early warning radar system in Bahrain. The IRGC also said it targeted a Jordanian air base hosting U.S. forces with ballistic missiles as well as a drone ramp and storage at a Kuwaiti base.

The Spin

Pro-Iran narrative

The U.S. has zero legal or moral authority to charge ships for crossing the Strait of Hormuz — that's straight-up piracy. Iran is the rightful guardian of that waterway, and American military interference is what's destabilizing regional trade and security. Any country that sides with Washington in this power grab is inviting the flames of conflict onto itself.

Pro-Trump narrative

Four months of sustained strikes have gutted Iran's navy, air force and missile capabilities, and the U.S. blockade will choke off a regime that kept attacking commercial shipping. Without this pressure, Iran gets a nuclear weapon and the entire Middle East changes forever. Backing off now would hand a lifeline to a government its own people want gone.

Narrative C

The Strait of Hormuz does not need a guardian; it has always been free. Trump gave Iran the perfect excuse to control the waterway. Neither the U.S. nor Iran has signed the U.N. Law of the Sea treaty, yet both invoked it over the strait to support opposing claims. After billions of dollars spent and hundreds of lives lost, the outcome appears less stable than before the conflict began, and hopes for lasting peace have faded.

Nerd narrative

There's an 87% chance that a newly constructed oil or natural gas pipeline intended to bypass the Strait of Hormuz will become fully operational before Jan. 1, 2031, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Report: YouTube Still Recommends Eating Disorder Videos to Teens

The Facts

  • A new report by the Council for Countering Digital Hate has claimed that YouTube's algorithm recommended harmful eating disorder content in one in 9 videos shown to simulated 13-year-old accounts in 2026, down from 1 in 3 in 2024, following the introduction of the U.K.'s Online Safety Act and the EU's Digital Services Act.

  • None of the 34 harmful eating disorder videos identified in the 2026 testing triggered a crisis resource panel, despite YouTube describing such panels as "an important part of the suite of health products on YouTube." Crisis panels instead appeared on five non-harmful videos.

  • Meanwhile, YouTube's eating disorder crisis panels remain available in only two of the EU's 27 member states — France and Germany — a situation unchanged since CCDH's 2024 investigation.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

Whilst regulation has moved the needle, YouTube's algorithm is still funneling eating disorder content and the continued level of exposure of children to harmful material is still nowhere near good enough. Platforms must be required to stop this content from surfacing at all, and until then, it is much safer to keep kids off these platforms altogether.

Pro-establishment narrative

YouTube's child safety framework goes well beyond what regulators require dispersion models limit repeated exposure to harmful body-image content, age inference technology restricts mature material, and dedicated child accounts provide layered, expert-informed protections. The system is working, with a continuous investment in safety-by-design proving the commitment is genuine.

US Refunds $81B in Tariffs in Fiscal Year 2026

The Facts

  • The U.S. government has paid out over $81 billion in tariff refunds so far this fiscal year, compared with $5 billion during the same period the year prior, according to budget data published by the Treasury Department on Monday.

  • Speaking to The Guardian, a Treasury Department official said the spike was due to the U.S. Supreme Court's February ruling that U.S. President Donald Trump lacked authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose global tariffs.

  • As revealed by court documents in March, the judicial body's decision invalidated approximately $166 billion in tariffs paid by more than 330,000 importers on 53 million shipments, necessitating their reimbursement.

The Spin

Right Establishment-Critical Narrative

Thanks to the Supreme Court, the U.S. finds itself in this mess, where the federal government is forced to hand back tens of billions of dollars in tax revenue to large corporations. This massive financial hit comes with no guarantee of any benefit to everyday Americans, as companies are unlikely to lower prices and the government is less incentivized to invest in public services.

Right Pro-Establishment Narrative

Months after the IEEPA tariffs were struck down, the Trump administration has yet to pay even half of what it owes. To make matters worse, bureaucratic hurdles have locked out small businesses while prioritizing corporate giants, and the White House continues to fight to retain its ill-gotten gains. The administration must correct its errors and pay these duties back immediately.

Left narrative

Once again, the American worker is being left behind by this administration. Despite having paid the cost of these illegal tariffs themselves, the administration is choosing to line the pockets of big business rather than reimburse ordinary Americans. This outrage must be rectified, and the multi-billion-dollar refunds must be redirected to the American families left out of pocket.

Nerd narrative

There's a 90% chance that customs duties revenue to the federal government will increase from $80 billion in fiscal year 2023 to $160 billion in fiscal year 2026 (in 2023 dollars), according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Burnham Set to Be UK PM After Securing Labour MPs' Support

The Facts

  • Andy Burnham is set to be the next British prime minister after securing the Labour leadership on Monday.

  • The new MP for Makerfield received the backing of an additional 27 Labour colleagues to start the week, taking his total nominations from 322 to 349 and making it mathematically impossible for anyone else in the party to reach the 81-vote, or 20%, threshold.

  • It means the former Greater Manchester mayor is set to replace Sir Keir Starmer as Labour leader at a special party conference on Friday before becoming prime minister on the Monday that follows.

The Spin

Labour Party narrative

Under Starmer's leadership, MPs lived under a sort of reign of terror where they could not express any opposition. Burnham's bid to restore the broad church approach, as well as to be more accessible, is a breath of fresh air and is the right mentality to deliver for the people of this country and make Labour successful again.

Conservative narrative

When the Conservatives were in power, Labour rightly complained that a change of leadership does not automatically give the new prime minister a mandate from the British people. Now that Labour are in charge, they're hypocritically doing the same thing. Burnham needs to call an early election to test whether the British people want him, or someone else, to lead the country.

Nerd narrative

There's a 35% chance that the U.K. will have a Labour prime minister on Jan. 1, 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Hungary Passes Amendment to End President's Mandate

The Facts

  • Hungary's Parliament passed 139-6 the 17th amendment to the Fundamental Law on Monday, with Fidesz and KDNP boycotting the session. The measure ends President Tamás Sulyok's mandate the day after it takes effect.

  • Sulyok has five days to sign the amendment into law. If he declines, Prime Minister Péter Magyar said he would initiate impeachment proceedings against the president, which would automatically suspend him from office.

  • The amendment reinstates the retirement age of 70 for Constitutional Court judges, a rule Fidesz removed in 2013. This ends the terms of Court President Peter Polt and three others in two months after the amendment takes effect.

The Spin

Left narrative

Keeping Sulyok in office after a democratic transition had left Fidesz's institutional grip firmly in place is the problem the 17th amendment aims to fix. Sulyok actively worked against EU integration, resisted aid to Ukraine and upheld policies the new government was elected to reverse. Orbán's refusal to recognize the incoming president as legitimate, while offering zero specifics on what "resistance" means, exposed Fidesz as unwilling to accept democratic outcomes it doesn't control.

Right narrative

Removing Sulyok by amending the Fundamental Law bypasses the legal safeguards that exist for exactly this kind of situation. The process lacked proper procedural guarantees — and the move causes more damage than it prevents. Rushing a constitutional amendment through with a shortened comment period is raw political power unleashed in the name of democratic reforms.

Nerd narrative

There's a 3% chance that Hungary will leave the EU before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

200 Economists, Tech Leaders Warn of AI's Threats

The Facts

  • More than 200 economists and AI researchers, including 16 Nobel laureates and executives from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI, released a joint statement Monday titled "We Must Act Now" urging policymakers to prepare for AI's potential economic disruption.

  • The letter warns that AI could drive a transformation "larger than the Industrial Revolution, but unfolding over a vastly shorter time frame," with risks including large-scale job displacement.

  • The letter calls on economists, policymakers and technology leaders to deepen research on AI's economic impacts and build policies to ensure the technology complements human capabilities, though it does not include specific policy recommendations.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

AI could reshape labor markets, widen inequality, outpace regulations and trigger an economic upheaval larger than the Industrial Revolution, compressed into years rather than centuries. Large-scale job displacement is a real risk, and the window to build guardrails is closing fast. Policymakers cannot afford to wait for perfect data before acting.

Pro-establishment narrative

The doomsday warnings about AI wiping out workers don't hold up against actual data — productivity gains predated mass AI adoption, and history shows automation consistently creates new sectors. AI is already generating roughly $100 billion in services revenue, signaling real economic value. Alarm-driven policy built on speculation risks strangling a technology that could broadly raise living standards.

Nerd narrative

There is a 5.5% chance that five years after AGI, a single AI company will dominate the world economy, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

UK: First Ebola Vaccine to Start Human Trials

The Facts

  • The University of Oxford has launched the world's first Phase I clinical trial of a vaccine against Bundibugyo ebolavirus, 57 days after the WHO declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.

  • The Bundibugyo outbreak is now the third-largest Ebola outbreak on record, with 1,926 confirmed cases and 702 deaths across five provinces in the DRC as of Saturday, and 20 cases, including two deaths, confirmed in Uganda on Sunday.

  • The BD-Ebov trial will enroll 50 healthy adults aged 18 to 55 in Oxford to assess the safety and immune response of the ChAdOx1 BDBV vaccine, which uses the same viral vector platform as the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID vaccine.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Oxford's launch of the world's first Bundibugyo ebolavirus vaccine trial is exactly the kind of rapid, coordinated global response that saves lives. Built on the same platform as the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID vaccine, the ChAdOx1 BDBV candidate reached human trials just 57 days after the WHO declared an emergency. With 620,000 doses already stockpiled, this is science moving at the speed the moment demands.

Establishment-critical narrative

Calling the Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine trial a rapid response ignores the delays and weakened public health capacity surrounding it. Critics argue that cuts to agencies like the CDC and USAID have reduced outbreak preparedness just as threats from Ebola, measles, bird flu and other diseases are resurfacing. A vaccine alone can't replace the surveillance, expertise and global networks needed to detect and contain outbreaks quickly.

Narrative C

The Ebola crisis exposed deeper failures of Western intervention in Africa, where decades of colonial legacies left local communities vulnerable. Western responses often arrived late, prioritized foreign expertise over African medical knowledge, and used humanitarian crises to expand geopolitical influence. While vaccines and aid can help, sustainable solutions require strengthening local healthcare systems rather than relying on external powers.

Nerd narrative

There is an 8% chance that a case of Bundibugyo Ebola disease will be first confirmed in the U.S. before 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Brazil Court Bars Flavio From Visiting Jailed Bolsonaro

The Facts

  • Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes barred Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro from visiting his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, for 90 days on Monday, after Flavio read a handwritten letter from his father during a social media livestream.

  • Jair Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest for his conviction of leading a coup attempt after losing the 2022 election. His sentence terms bar him from using social media directly or through third parties.

  • Moraes ruled that Flavio used his visit to obtain the letter solely to publish it online, circumventing his father's restrictions. He noted a similar incident in August 2025 had contributed to Jair Bolsonaro being placed under house arrest.

The Spin

Left narrative

Flávio didn't visit his father out of filial devotion. He visited to fetch a "letter" timed for release the same day, couched in sentiments but built as a campaign launch. Moraes was right to call it what it was a workaround of Bolsonaro's social-media ban, laundered through visitation rights meant for family, not for smuggling out political ultimatums.

Right narrative

Justice Moraes' day ban on Flávio visiting his jailed father is timed to block communication during the most critical stretch of the electoral calendar, including the convention formalizing Flávio's candidacy. Barring a son from speaking to his father by judicial decree — while President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was permitted interviews during his imprisonment — exposes a blatant double standard. This is political suppression.

US Inflation Drops to 3.5% in June on Energy Price Reprieve

The Facts

  • U.S. consumer prices fell 0.4% in June on a monthly basis, the largest single-month decline since April 2020, bringing the annual inflation rate down to 3.5% from 4.2% in May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

  • A 5.7% drop in energy prices drove the monthly decline, with gasoline falling 9.7% and fuel oil dropping 9.2%. Despite the monthly pullback, energy prices remained 15.7% higher than a year earlier, with gasoline up 26.7% annually.

  • Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, was unchanged month-over-month in June and slowed to 2.6% annually from 2.9% in May. Shelter costs rose just 0.1%, the smallest monthly increase since January 2021, while food prices rose 0.2%.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

Trump's tariffs and the Iran conflict have driven inflation higher, costing the average American family over $2,500 this year — the exact opposite of what was promised. Energy prices are straining budgets, real incomes are falling, and lower-income Americans are getting hit hardest. Trump's recklessness is costing America dearly.

Republican narrative

Real-time data shows inflation running at just 0.9% — one-third of CPI — because government metrics badly lag housing, now falling in deportation-heavy cities. The Fed's outdated methodology missed Bidenflation's peak and is missing Trump's deflationary gains. Warsh at the Fed means lower rates and a methodology that finally tells the truth.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance that the annual headline CPI inflation in the United States in 2026 will be at least 3.2%, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

SCOTUS Justices Testify on $228M Budget, Rising Threats

The Facts

  • Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett testified before House and Senate appropriations subcommittees on Tuesday — the first time sitting justices have appeared before Congress since 2019 — to defend the Supreme Court's $228 million fiscal year 2027 budget request.

  • The requested budget represents a roughly 10% increase over the prior year, with $14.6 million earmarked for expanding personal protection for justices and $2 million for an off-site residential security post to improve emergency response times.

  • The Supreme Court Police recently assumed round-the-clock residential protection of the justices from the U.S. Marshals Service, which had provided that coverage since a 2022 assassination attempt against Justice Brett Kavanaugh at his Maryland home.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

Trump's relentless attacks on judges as "lunatics" and "monsters" have created a direct pipeline to real-world violence — 400 federal judges faced serious threats last year, a 78% jump in four years. Judges are getting bomb threats, death threats and fake murder reports called to their homes. Demonizing the courts is a deliberate strategy to delegitimize the one institution standing between executive overreach and the Constitution.

Republican narrative

The left's political violence against judges gets buried while media clutch pearls over harsh words. A man flew across the country armed to assassinate three Supreme Court justices — and a Biden-appointed judge handed him barely eight years. Chuck Schumer stood outside the Supreme Court threatening Kavanaugh and Gorsuch by name, and paid zero price. Lenient sentences and selective outrage only guarantee more violence against the bench.
