Fla. Gov. DeSantis on Mon. signed into law the Parental Rights in Education bill, which bans discussing sexual orientation or gender identity in primary schools, or in a manner that isn't "age-appropriate" or "developmentally appropriate."
Bill HB 1557, dubbed the 'Don't Say Gay or Trans' bill by critics, passed the Republican-controlled state legislature earlier in March, in a 22-17 vote.
This is about giving power back to parents and protecting children's innocence, making sure teachers aren't having sensitive conversations with students before they're ready.
This is the latest in homophobic legislation being pushed by Republicans across the country, disguising itself as protecting parents' rights. It encourages discrimination against LGBTQ+ youth, which could have tragic consequences.
