Why is France’s fire safety record such a disgrace?

At least ten people, including five children aged three to 15, were killed when a massive fire broke out on Friday at a seven-story residential building in Vaulx-en-Velin, near the French City of Lyon.
Nearly 170 firefighters and 65 fire engines were reportedly sent to douse the fire. Authorities have opened an investigation to find the cause of the blaze, which also left four people critically injured.
This story smacks of potential corruption needing to be urgently investigated — including property management firms who cater to the super wealthy while allowing dilapidated and unsafe conditions in other units. Local authorities must answer why nothing had been done to improve fire safety in the area despite repeated complaints by residents and neighbors. This is a national disgrace.
It's too early to jump to conclusions. Potential factors could include faulty wiring, criminal intent, or government apathy. Right now, the nation is in mourning, and the focus must remain on relocating the displaced residents instead of casting blame. Due process will ultimately yield the truth.
