French political leader Marine Le Pen vowed to fight her recent embezzlement conviction, describing it as a "witch hunt" and "political" at a rally in Paris on Sunday.

It came after Le Pen and nearly two dozen members of her right-wing National Rally party were found guilty of illicitly using upwards of €4 million ($4,377,560) of EU funds to pay party staff who were not involved in EU parliamentary activity.

For Le Pen, unless the conviction is overturned on appeal, it will mean a four-year prison sentence — two of which will be suspended and two of which can be served under house arrest with an electronic bracelet — and a fine of €100,000. It also means a five-year ban on holding public office, effective immediately, which would prevent her from running in the 2027 presidential race in which she led the polling.

Speaking to thousands of supporters at Place Vauban on Sunday, the 56-year-old Le Pen said: "I do not know giving up. I do not know surrender. We are committed to the fight." She went on to allege that the existence of France was at stake.

Earlier in the day, in a video appearance at a rally for Italy's Matteo Salvini and his anti-immigration Lega party in Florence, Le Pen also invoked the U.S. civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. "Our fight will be a peaceful fight, a democratic fight. We will follow Martin Luther King, who defended civil rights, as an example," she said.

Meanwhile, at a rival left-wing rally in Paris at the Place de la République, Green party leader Marine Tondelier said: "This is about more than Marine Le Pen. It's about defending the rule of law from people who think justice is optional."
