The Facts

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Argentina have reached a staff-level agreement on the first review of Argentina’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program, potentially unlocking approximately $2 billion in funding.
  • The EFF arrangement was originally approved by the IMF in April and provides $20 billion in funding for the South American country over 48 months, which included an immediate $12 billion disbursement.
  • The program, granted upon Argentina’s request for balance-of-payments assistance for its economic reforms, requires Argentina to maintain “a strong fiscal anchor,” implement “a more robust monetary and FX regime” and transition to a market-based economy.

The Spin

Narrative A

Argentina has made a solid start on its EFF arrangement. Through strong fiscal policies, flexible exchange rate controls and re-entry into international capital markets, Argentina is on its way to becoming a market-oriented economy, with falling inflation and poverty, and corresponding economic growth.

Narrative B

Despite Argentina’s initial progress, the country still faces significant structural economic issues, most notably regarding its external position. While net reserves rose by $6 billion in 2024, they remain critically low, with reserve coverage remaining inadequate. Argentina must address this promptly to secure future prosperity.
