The Facts

  • Meta Platforms announced that it will stop all political, electoral, and social issue advertising on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp in the European Union due to the EU's incoming Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) regulation.
  • Barring some exceptions, the TTPA will fully come into force on Oct. 10, and will allegedly allow EU citizens to make more informed political choices as well as ensure that political advertising respects the protection of personal data and the rights to freedoms of opinion and speech.
  • TTPA requirements include clear labels for political advertising, additional information to provide a wider context, new restrictions on targeted political advertising, a European online advertising repository, and a ban on political advertising from outside the EU in the three months before an election or referendum.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

The EU's burdensome regulations have forced Meta's hand. The TTPA's unworkable requirements create compliance burdens and uncertainty that make political advertising in the EU all but impossible. Meta's decision, however, will not prevent EU users, candidates, politicians, or political parties from debating politics or producing and sharing political content organically.

Pro-establishment narrative

The TTPA is crucial for safeguarding European democracy. By requiring platforms to provide greater context, more labels, and comply with additional restrictions for political advertising, the TTPA will ensure that EU citizens can make informed political choices ahead of national or EU-wide elections and referendums, while protecting their data and rights.
