The Facts

  • The president directed the Department of State Services to deploy trained forest guards and recruit additional staff to flush out armed groups hiding in forests, stating in a televised address that there will be no more hiding places for "agents of evil."
  • Tinubu also authorized the use of National Youth Service Corps camps as training facilities and ordered the redeployment of police officers from VIP guard duties to conflict zones after crash retraining, with about 100,000 officers of 371,000 tasked with protecting high-profile figures reassigned.
  • The security emergency declaration followed recent attacks in Kebbi, Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Yobe and Kwara states, where dozens of civilians were killed and kidnapped, including mass abductions of over 300 schoolchildren from a Catholic school in Niger state and 25 students in Kebbi state.
