The Spin

Narrative A

Stellantis’ proposition to shift manufacturing from Brampton to Illinois is a smack in the face for Canadian workers. It is a corporate decision that is in clear violation of the commitments and obligations the company made in return for generous Canadian investment. The government will not allow this to stand, and will fight it in the courts if necessary.

Narrative B

The announcement made by Stellantis makes economic sense. Developing the company’s footprint in the U.S. will fuel the automaker’s growth, an outcome that benefits both stakeholders and customers. Nor will the gains be restricted to the U.S., but rather experienced across Stellantis’ supply chain, including in Canada.

Cynical narrative

Stellantis’ decision to shift its manufacturing away from Ontario signals that the government’s multi-billion-dollar gamble on electric vehicles is in peril. As the White House pummels Canadian automakers with tariffs, there is a risk that the billions in government industrial subsidies may go to waste if these firms decide crossing the border is their best option.
