A 24-year-old Ukrainian-American, Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, has been arrested after illegally visiting North Sentinel Island in the Andaman Islands, where he offered a coconut and a can of soda to the Sentinelese tribe, who have remained uncontacted by the modern world for decades.

Polyakov departed from South Andaman on March 29 at midnight, reaching the island by 10 a.m. local time. He reportedly collected sand samples and recorded a video with his GoPro camera before returning to the resort area by 7 p.m.

This was not Polyakov's first attempt to reach protected tribes, having made a separate attempt in October 2024 using an inflatable kayak. He allegedly filmed the remote Jarawa tribe illegally during a visit to the Baratang Islands in January.
