The Facts

  • Apple's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, went on sale Friday, with the company saying its stores would have "limited" supply for walk-in customers and that it expected that stock to sell out quickly because of pre-order demand.
  • Walk-in stock was available in several countries, including the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. Customers in mainland China, France, Hong Kong, India and Japan could only collect devices ordered online.
  • Pre-orders opened Oct. 16 and sold out within minutes, pushing estimated delivery dates into late January. Apple described the customer response as "nothing short of extraordinary" and capped purchases at two handsets per customer.

The Spin

Narrative A

Selling out the priciest iPhone ever within minutes of preorders opening is proof that a foldable done right can command real pricing power. Constrained supply on a first-generation device with a brand-new hinge is expected, and slipping ship dates say far more about excitement than about failure. Waiting a few months for a polished foldable beats rushing out a half-baked one.

Narrative B

Knowing supply was severely limited and pushing ahead with a 70-country debut anyway turned a marquee moment into a monthslong wait. Spreading thin inventory across dozens of markets to hit a fiscal quarter target puts internal goals ahead of the shoppers who got up before dawn. Loyalty wears out fast when the flagship can't actually be shipped.
