Far-right outsiders have flooded Congress since 2018 to obstruct every reform the progressive camp has pushed for. Facing this institutional assault from within, winning the presidency isn't enough. The left must rally behind strong congressional candidates to defend Lula's agenda, including building alliances with accountable figures when needed. This is the only way to restore the system's dwindling legitimacy.

The Brazilian Congress has been hijacked by a swamp of ideology-free lawmakers, shielding the Supreme Court, stalling security reforms and inflating pork-barrel earmarks to unprecedented levels. While it was the left who built this scandal-plagued system, corruption is entrenched in parties across the political spectrum. Voters must reject not only leftist candidates, but also opportunists riding the conservative wave to use Congress for personal gain.
