- Canadian military officials announced on Thursday that the deadly grass fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday was sparked by a live fire exercise on the base's automatic grenade launcher range.
- Brig. Gen. Vanessa Hanrahan said the blaze initially stayed within the range's "Permanent Danger Area 2," which kept firefighters from suppressing it directly, until a change in wind direction and velocity increased its speed and intensity.
- At the time, 84 soldiers from Charlie Company of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, were engaged in high-intensity combat training split between the grenade range and an area where they practised attacks on simulated enemy positions.

Now, four soldiers are dead and dozens more lie in hospital beds thanks to that judgment call. The victims deserve a full, timely investigation and full accountability for those culpable.
