Deeper ties with the EU would open European defense procurement to Canadian manufacturers, unlock critical mineral and LNG contracts and let students, researchers and skilled workers move freely across the Atlantic. Pressure from Brussels could even force provinces to drop the internal trade and labor barriers dragging down growth. With Washington turning hostile, this alliance is a net win worth chasing.
Chasing Brussels means chasing decline, since the EU's share of the global economy has slid from 26% to 17%, while its regulatory obsession smothers space, AI and every emerging industry. CETA already scrapped 99% of tariff lines, so there is little left to gain. Nearly $3.6 billion in goods crosses the U.S. border daily, and no ocean-away bloc replaces that.
