China Sanctions Paraguay, Belize Ministers Over Taiwan Ties
The Facts
- China announced on Monday that it imposed sanctions under the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law on Paraguayan Information Technology Minister Gustavo Villate and Belizean Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca over their countries' diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
- This is the first time the PRC has sanctioned officials from diplomatic partners of the self-ruled island, after imposing similar measures on Western politicians for their support of Taiwan. Paraguay and Belize are among the 12 countries with formal diplomatic ties to Taiwan.
- The measures, which have come into effect on Monday, freeze any assets the two ministers might hold in China, bar them from entering the country, including Hong Kong and Macao, and prohibit Chinese organizations and individuals from doing business with them.

Foreign officials who let themselves get used as chess pieces by Taiwan separatists must be aware that they will face Chinese sanctions. Flying to the island and hosting independence backers is meddling in another country's internal affairs, and sovereignty isn't a bargaining chip to trade for favors. Betting on a losing separatist cause buys nothing but isolation.

Sanctioning foreign ministers for the crime of choosing their own friends is pure bullying. Every country has the right to choose its diplomatic partners, and no outside power can veto those decisions. Partnerships built on mutual benefit and respect for sovereignty will outlast symbolic visa bans and asset freezes meant to scare small nations into obedience.
