Don Nelson, the second-winningest coach in NBA history who won five championships as a player, died at the age of 86 on Sunday.

Nelson's professional playing career commenced in 1962 with the Chicago Zephyrs, where he spent a season before being picked up by the Los Angeles Lakers. A year later, he was signed by the Boston Celtics, where he went on to win five championships in his remaining 11 seasons.

In 1976, when he retired, he joined the Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant coach before being thrust into the head coaching role just 18 games into the season.

With the Bucks, he went on to win more than 250 games, a feat he repeated with the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks, making him only the second coach in NBA history to accomplish that. When he retired after 31 seasons in 2010, he was the NBA's winningest coach with 1,335 wins, but the mark was surpassed by Gregg Popovich in 2022.
