The Facts

  • European Parliament President Roberta Metsola on Monday announced a ban on all Iranian diplomatic staff and representatives from entering European Parliament premises in Brussels, Strasbourg, and Luxembourg in response to Iran's handling of protests faced by the Iranian regime since December.
  • The U.S-based Human Rights Activists News Agency estimates the protests have resulted in at least 544 deaths, while Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency has reported at least 111 security personnel killed in the violence over the past two weeks.
  • Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the U.S. and Israeli of playing a role in the violence, adding that “most of those killed were shot from behind.” The protests, which began on Dec. 28, 2025, in response to the rial's collapse, have since spread across Iran, with demonstrators' demands broadening in scope.

The Spin

Narrative A

Europe must urgently revive nuclear negotiations with Iran, as military escalation or weaponization would destabilize an already fragile security environment. The E3 has decades of mediating experience and remains Iran's only viable negotiating partner since Tehran refuses direct talks with the U.S. under maximum pressure. Without European diplomatic intervention offering credible sanctions relief and regional buy-in, Iran will likely retaliate as it did in 2019-2020.

Narrative B

Iran's brutal crackdown killing over 540 protesters and arresting 10,000 more demands harsher EU sanctions, not diplomatic engagement that legitimizes a murderous regime. The Islamic Republic has sustained itself through torture, repression and murder while supplying Russia with drones and threatening regional stability. Europe must stand fully behind Iranian demonstrators by banning Iranian diplomats and imposing punitive measures, not rewarding Tehran's violence with negotiations.
