Father Gets 15 Years in Apalachee School Shooting Case

Did Colin Gray's negligence make him complicit in the shooting or is 15 years too harsh for a father who never pulled the trigger?

The Facts

  • Colin Gray, 55, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Thursday for providing his son with the rifle used in the Sept. 4, 2024, mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Ga., which killed two students and two teachers.
  • A jury convicted Colin Gray in March on 27 counts, including second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children, after deliberating for fewer than two hours. His son, Colt Gray, was sentenced to life in prison without parole two days earlier after pleading guilty to 55 charges.
  • Judge Nicholas Primm said Colin Gray "failed as a parent" and that warning signs grew "brighter and brighter," but noted the father did not intend to commit a crime and distinguished his actions from those of his son.

The Spin

Narrative A

Colin Gray didn't just fail his son — he armed a deeply troubled teenager despite years of glaring warning signs, then did nothing. Law enforcement had already told him to restrict Colt's access to guns, and months later he bought the boy a high-powered rifle for Christmas. Four people are dead because of that choice, and 15 years is the bare minimum accountability demands.

Narrative B

Fifteen years is a serious sentence for a man who never intended to commit a crime and didn't pull the trigger. The judge himself said punishing negligence in this case was nearly impossible without passion clouding the process. Holding a grieving father criminally responsible for his son's actions sets a troubling precedent for how far parental liability can stretch.
