The Facts

  • FIFA on Tuesday announced plans to create a $20 billion subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), to oversee its commercial and event operations, including the World Cup, and to sell minority stakes of up to 21% to private investors, raising up to $4.2 billion.
  • Thrive Eternal, a long-term investment vehicle founded by Joshua Kushner — brother of Jared Kushner, who is married to U.S. President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka — is expected to lead the proposed investor group, while JPMorgan will serve as FIFA's chief financial adviser on the project.
  • FIFA said all 211 member associations would be eligible to access up to $20 million each in one-off capital funding under a parallel initiative called the FIFA Fast Forward Program, while total planned development funding is projected to exceed $10 billion over the next four years.

The Spin

Narrative A

FIFA is trying to sell off the soul of the game to private investors, and that's a betrayal of every fan who ever packed a stadium. The World Cup belongs to the people, not to a boardroom full of financiers looking for a return. Football's governance and identity are not commercial assets, and handing any slice of them to outside investors sets a precedent that can never be undone.

Narrative B

FIFA's plan would funnel up to $20 million per member association into grassroots infrastructure, coaching and women's football — tripling current development funding. FIFA retains full control, investors get only minority, non-controlling stakes, and every net benefit gets reinvested back into the game. Blocking this deal means smaller nations stay underfunded while wealthier football powers keep pulling further ahead.
