The Facts

  • Five climbers from Bosnia and Herzegovina died on Russia's Mount Elbrus, Russian media, citing officials, reported on Sunday.
  • According to the reports, a group of seven climbers had been climbing the peak — one of the world's Seven Summits — when one of the climbers descended to report that two members of the group had fallen ill at an altitude of 5,100 metres.
  • The two were discovered dead and their bodies were recovered, officials said. A later update from Russia's Investigative Committee on Sunday confirmed that a further individual was rescued alive but that three were found dead and that their bodies could not be recovered due to inclement weather conditions.

The Spin

Narrative A

While Mount Elbrus, located in southern Russia near the border with Georgia, is technically less demanding to climb than other peaks, it is notorious for its rapidly changing weather conditions including high winds and big temperature drops that can turn a routine climb into one with life-threatening conditions.

Narrative B

Those involved in this tragedy were experienced climbers and were well known in Bosnia and Herzegovina's mountaineering community as they made many friends and acquaintances across their numerous expeditions. That's why this news has impacted the community and the country particularly strongly.
