The Spin

Right narrative

Islamist extremism is a real and growing threat across Europe, and France's synagogue attack plot makes that undeniable. Six men were charged after authorities found a stolen vehicle loaded with a Kalashnikov and a Beretta near Sarcelles, where a synagogue sits. Dismissing this pattern of violence as anything other than ideologically motivated does a disservice to every victim.

Left narrative

An alleged attack on a synagogue is deeply concerning, but using it to portray Islamist extremism as Europe's defining security threat overlooks the range of extremist violence authorities face. France's focus on "Islamist separatism" has coincided with rising anti-Muslim incidents, warning that state rhetoric risks stigmatizing an already marginalized community.
