Firing mutilating weapons at schoolkids is indefensible, and no crowd-control doctrine justifies leaving teenagers maimed for showing up outside a blockaded school. Hauling thousands of minors into cells on empty files looks like intimidation meant to scare a generation off the streets. Banning weapons that blow off hands and take out eyes is the bare minimum owed to children in a democracy.
Mortar fireworks launched inside schools and masked intruders terrorizing staff have nothing to do with demanding better teachers or decent buildings. Officers facing that kind of violence need less-lethal tools to keep distance and protect the students caught in the middle. The 36 allegations are under investigation, but casting every arrest as proof of repression insults the young people who actually came to be heard.
Macron's government has left police officers demoralized and feeling abandoned, even as nearly 900 members of law enforcement have been injured. Officers cannot be expected to maintain order while political leaders undermine their authority. Vandalism, threats and assaults in schools must bring firm consequences, and peaceful students must not be drowned out by violent agitators.
