France Suspends High School Classes as Protests Turn Violent

Are students rightly protesting crumbling schools and teacher cuts or are teenagers being used as street muscle by a far-left machine?

The Facts

  • French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu on Tuesday suspended classes in high schools for the remainder of the week to allow what he called a period of "internal democracy" for headteachers, teachers and pupils to discuss conditions.
  • The Interior Ministry counted about 266,000 demonstrators nationwide on Tuesday, including 56,000 in Paris, while high school and university organizers put the total at 450,000, with 100,000 in the capital.
  • Classes were fully or partially suspended at 891 schools, according to the Education Ministry, while students' unions said about 1,800 to 2,000 high schools were blockaded or closed on what protesters called "Act Three" of the movement.

The Spin

Narrative A

Kids shouldn't have to learn under leaking roofs, with rats in the cafeteria and without a teacher for months. Cutting permanent teaching posts while schools literally crumble is an insult to a generation that already lost years to the pandemic. When teenagers get gassed, maimed and locked up for demanding a functioning classroom, the shame belongs to the government, not the students.

Narrative B

Torching fire trucks, attacking staff and smashing property have nothing to do with broken toilets or crowded classrooms. Teenagers are being used as street muscle by a far-left machine more interested in toppling a government than fixing a single roof. The only thing these riots will deliver is a bigger win for the hard right next spring.
