Version 7.18.3
A confession delivered only after police seized the photos is damage control, not atonement. Years of assaults on children, some barely out of toddlerhood, in hospital rooms and daycares deserve the harshest penalty available. Neither the doctor's admissions nor expressions of remorse should spare him from facing the full consequences of his actions.
A full admission that spares traumatized children the ordeal of testifying is worth more to those families than a drawn-out spectacle. The doctor's expression of immense guilt and apology may offer some measure of remorse to those affected.
The institutional failures are another major scandal in this case. One mother's complaint was needed to end more than a decade of abuse, while the rule requiring a second adult in the exam room went ignored. Without honest institutional review, the next doctor may well get the same decade of cover.
