Version 7.18.3
Stearns' ruling rightfully suspends a rule that would cruelly force cancer patients and people with neuromuscular diseases to prove on paper that illness blocks a job. This would do nothing for program integrity. Congress wrote the medical frailty exemption to shield the seriously ill, and no agency should get to shrink it into a work-capacity test.
Stearns got this one wrong. About 20 hours a week of work, school or volunteering is a modest ask in exchange for taxpayer-funded coverage. Letting states rubber-stamp frailty claims with form letters and self-attestation would swallow the rule whole and keep billions flowing toward improper enrollment. One national standard tied to real functional limits protects everyone.
