Pouring borrowed trillions into data centers that cannot turn a profit is a recipe for a 2008-style wipeout, only bigger this time. Off-balance-sheet debt, circular deals among the same handful of firms and rubber-stamp accounting are the same tricks that blew up Wall Street before. Slowing this juggernaut down now beats cleaning up the wreckage later.
Real earnings, not hype, are driving this build-out, and that is what separates it from the dot-com bubble of decades ago. Companies are already banking measurable productivity gains, enterprise adoption is still early and demand for computing capacity keeps outrunning supply. Doom talk about mass joblessness and an imminent crash ignores how selective lenders and investors are being.
Crypto and AI together form an even worse bubble. AI's boom dwarfs crypto's 2021 peak in venture dollars, yet shares the same capital crowding, valuations outrunning revenue and circular financing. Crypto remains the most liquid tip of speculative risk, now woven into traditional investments. A Binance-scale breach, insider selling or leveraged unwind can force liquidations that spill into AI and the broader market, turning a tech correction into a systemic cascade.
