The Facts

Dutch art detective Arthur Brand announced on Monday that "Portrait of a Young Girl" by Dutch artist Toon Kelder, which was looted from Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudstikker's collection during World War II, had been found in the home of descendants of Dutch SS collaborator Hendrik Seyffardt.

Brand was alerted to the painting's location by an anonymous Seyffardt family member, who told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf: "I feel ashamed. The painting should be returned to the heirs of Goudstikker." The current holder of the painting denied knowing it was looted.

Brand identified the painting by tracing a Goudstikker label on its back and the number 92 carved into its frame to a 1940 auction catalog, where item No. 92 was listed as "Portrait of a Young Girl" by Kelder. Nazi official Hermann Goering had plundered Goudstikker's entire collection that year.

Lawyers for the Goudstikker heirs confirmed the painting was looted and called for its return. However, Dutch police cannot act due to the statute of limitations, while the Dutch Restitution Committee cannot compel private individuals to return artworks.

Seyffardt, one of the highest-ranking Dutch collaborators with the Nazis, commanded a Waffen-SS unit on the Eastern Front and was assassinated by Dutch resistance fighters in 1943. A Nazi state funeral was held for him in The Hague, with a wreath sent by Adolf Hitler.

The case parallels a 2025 discovery in which another Goudstikker painting appeared in an Argentine property listing. Argentine police raided the home and the family eventually surrendered the work. Brand described the Dutch case as "the most bizarre ... of my entire career."
