Pentagon Weighs Pulling 25K US Troops From Europe
The Facts
- The Pentagon is reportedly weighing the withdrawal of about 25,000 U.S. troops from Europe, roughly a third of the estimated 80,000 stationed there. Officials said the removal figure could reach 40,000, but added that no final decision has yet been made.
- Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, NATO's supreme allied commander, is expected to hand an initial analysis to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Friday. A final recommendation is due Nov. 6 before going to President Donald Trump.
- This reportedly stems from a six-month review Hegseth announced in June, covering air, naval and ground forces and the possible shift of some troops to NATO's eastern flank. Germany, Italy and Spain currently host the largest U.S. contingents.

Pulling 25,000 troops from Europe now is spite. It is oddly timed, coming right after the EU-Canada trade pact that seems to have rattled Trump. Moscow has been probing for exactly this kind of opening with sabotage, drone incursions, and arson across the continent, and this hands them a green light. American forces in Europe are already thinner than Cold War norms, munitions stocks are dangerously low, and Europe's rearmament isn't ready to fill the gap.

The tens of thousands of American troops stationed in Europe are the very reason allies never get serious about their own defense. NATO-Europe already outspends and outmans a Russia that can't push past the Dnipro even after half a million casualties, so the balance of power is not in question. Spending pledges bought with accounting tricks and future promises mean nothing; a phased American withdrawal is the only move that will force the shifting of the military burden.
