The Facts

  • U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) resigned from office Tuesday, stating the Ethics Committee investigation of her was "not a fair process" and calling it a "witch hunt."
  • Cherfilus-McCormick resigned minutes before the House Ethics Committee was set to consider sanctions against her, following a two-year probe that found more than 20 ethics violations. Committee Chairman Michael Guest said the panel lost jurisdiction once she stepped down.
  • Cherfilus-McCormick was indicted in November 2025 on charges of stealing $5 million in FEMA disaster relief funds and funneling a portion into her 2021 congressional campaign. She pleaded not guilty and faces a maximum sentence of 53 years in prison if convicted.

The Spin

Narrative A

Cherfilus-McCormick's resignation is a win for accountability. She bolted right before the Ethics Committee voted to recommend her expulsion, which tells you everything you need to know. After stealing $5 million dollars in FEMA funds, she had no leg to stand on. It is now incumbent upon the Justice Department to pursue the matter fully and ensure that appropriate legal consequences follow.

Narrative B

Forcing Cherfilus-McCormick out before her criminal trial was even close to finished trampled her due process rights and left hundreds of thousands of her constituents without a voice. The Ethics Committee refused her attorney's reasonable request for time to prepare a defense, making a fair process impossible. Punishing an entire district for allegations against one person is a dangerous precedent.
